Jim Thomas Energy Consultancy
For your home

Three quotes, three different answers, and no way to judge them.

That is usually the point people ring me. Not because they do not want solar or a heat pump, but because nobody has told them what their house actually needs, or in what order.

The problem with one-product quotes

Measures fitted in the wrong order cost you twice.

Panels sized against a heating bill you are about to halve. A heat pump specified for a house that has not been insulated yet, so it runs hot and expensive for the next fifteen years. A battery bought before anyone checked your tariff. Each install was fine on its own terms. Together they do not add up.

Sorting the order out first is cheap. Sorting it out afterwards is not.

Where something is worth taking forward, the detailed design (heat loss calculations, electrical capacity, refrigerant work) is done by the certified specialist who will install it. That is a requirement of their certification, not something I can shortcut. I arrange it, brief them, and check what comes back. Their fee is quoted separately and you will see it before agreeing to anything.

Common questions

The things people ask on the first call.

Do you install any of this yourself?

No. That is deliberate, and it is what lets me tell you when something is not worth doing. I work with a small group of electrical, renewables, assessment and refrigeration contractors I have used before, but you are never obliged to use them.

So what exactly am I paying you for?

Working out what your building actually needs before anyone sells you anything, and in what order. Then, if you want it, running the job: briefing the specialists, checking their work, holding contractors to the scope. You are paying for judgement and for someone on your side of the table.

Do you get paid by the installers?

Sometimes, where a job goes ahead through a contractor I have introduced. If that applies to your project I tell you in writing before you commit, and you will see the figure. Your fee to me does not change either way.

What if the answer is do nothing?

Then that is the answer, and it is still worth the fee. It is a good deal cheaper than a wrong twelve thousand pound installation. It happens, and it will happen again.

Can I take the report and get my own quotes?

Yes, and plenty of people do. It is written to be handed to any competent installer. You own it.

How far do you travel?

Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands as standard. Further by arrangement, with travel agreed up front.
